The new Photo club season has started and the first merit competition is due Monday: subject "Food".

I had a fancyful idea for four pictures Fenel Onion Orange and Dates the more observant of you would notice the first letters spell Food. I decided it was above the judges head so I am working on this still life.
    Any comments please.

    Re: Onions

Hi Patrick, to me this looks a little too warm and cosy for a few veggies. If there were some legs and few feathers or fur sticking out it might illicit the "ahh" factor, but somehow, despite it being technically okay (IMO) it doesn't look right (maybe it's the lighting?)

Yes I think you are right in what you say, done some more. Ironicaly that was daylight, here is one done with artificial light.

Some work to do yet before its as I visualise it.

        Re: Onions

I am really liking the texture of the sacking in the first photograph posted. I also like the way the light falls to the side of the onions and garlic. The red looks a little artificial to me, but what is really going through my mind is that the rich tones of russet skinned onions would look much more autumnal and go along with the warm mellow feel of the shot. Just my opinion but I am not too keen on the reflected light on the skins of the onions in the second photograph. The bluey tinge makes it feel cold.

The first one for me, why don't you have all four foods in one photos?

The first image for me, the second is terrible (in comparison) I like the detail and soft natural lighting in the first shot, a few more vegies might help, especially warm and mellow autumnal colored ones, and perhaps some small hand harvesting tools, the possibilities are endless, just don't overdo it.
Great concept and idea. Good Luck.

              Re: Onions

I like the concept but find that the hessian fabric overshadows the subject. If you were to use a larger onion to the left & place subject off centre, taking a closer shot of the subject would enhance it overall, in mho! The onions look too formally placed! A looser arrangement would help!

Thank you all for your feed back, as you may have gathered I wasn't happy with either result.
Here is another I am happy with (I think), The hessian is a more natural colour and as such isnt dominationg the onions as much. I shall be trying with three onions and a garlic later.
I have got to go and get the third, I did have three but one has gone wrotten and desgusting.

                    Re: Onions

I really like the fabric used here to present the veggies but I feel that the sack cloth features too heavily. Zooming in further on the veggies, thus reducing the amount of fabric in the surrounding areas, I feel would improve the overall composition.

                      Thanks Tom
Spent a number of pleasant hours this afternoon photographing a selection of vegetables. I came up with these two efforts, I'm going to use the high key garlic, delighted with the print done it on Hahnemuhle Fine Art.
