I wanted to keep this as simple as possible, any comments?

Simply put. I love it. The strong blue makes the picture. That said have you tried croping a little form the bottom and little from the right to see what that would do. It might make a stronger photograph.

I can see the picture does work with the crop, but it does detract from the rise of the hill that was there and that is what led your eye to the sky, thats not to say I dont like the crop.

Composition V Impact a tricky problem to resolve at times Mike. With this I'd go for the latter. I've tried in the past to photograph these straw bales and its not easy. I think with your picture there is potential for a very good image, just by the juxtaposition of the bales

                Hi Mike,
I prefer this shot. I found the wispy cloud in the former somewhat distracting. Also like the lines and colours of the newly growing grass sprouting through is more striking. Just MVHO of course!

I prefer Mike's original. The bales are well spaced and I think the portion on the right and at the bottom add to the spacious effect.

Both very good shots. How often do we moan about cloudless and feature-less skies and here we have exactly that; in this case an impressive asset to the overall composition.
I don't think eye needs anything to lead it to that sky
I do argee with the crop suggestion but not necessarily from the right.
                    Well done Mike.

Like Pol, I prefer the first version uncropped - or if I'd cropped, it would have been less....

However, I do like the second photo best - I just like the way in which it shows the land sloping in different directions
