On the Beach

This was one of the shots I'd originally considered entering in Autumn's 'Blowing in the Wind' salon.. but chose to enter something else instead.

Someone, not a million miles away, recently mentioned I could probably be slightly bolder when post-processing. I agree - so I got a bit bolder with this one.

Hi Pol, great picture, what really caught my eye is the top half of the photo looked like a painting, a style worth pursuing.

Thank you for the comment. I've been watching some of what you've been doing and saying actually and that had some influence on the way I went about the processing.

As a matter of fact I have another one, which is just the empty beach and similar distant view- shot just a few steps further along the beach. I'll dig out a copy and post again.

I just think it is a wonderfully happy photo, definitely would have met the criteria of the current salon challenge.

At first I didn't see the girl but still thought it was a lovely aesthetically pleasing photograph, but then as it unfolded and I saw the happy girl with her hair blowing it just completed the picture (if you know what I mean) for me.

I like the colours of the pebbles, all bright and shiny with the colours becoming more muted as the picture recedes. Well done.

I would have cloned out the bit of pink behind her.

Here's the other one. I think I'd like to go back to the beach and have another crack at this one - maybe aim for less, or even no sand in the foreground.

I've test printed this one at 7 x5 and it matches the curtains perfectly so it's stuck on the wall in a corner by the window (and curtains)

I must say that I love the effect, use the same technique to make up a folio of say 6-12 images......

Yes, I was looking at that one a few minutes ago in your gallery. Where is the beach Pol? It looks unusual; if the sand weren't there I would think I was viewing it from a boat with the waves flowing towards the houses.

You asked about the post processing earlier. This processing is much heavier than your usual style. I am not sure about it. At first it gave me the feeling that you had found a new filter so you might as well use it. Stephen's are getting a bit like that also. They have a more painterly rather than photographic feel to them.

I think it beginning to grow on me. It's different. Are you using 'Find Edges' as part of the blend?

I think you're probably right about that bit of pink stuff behind her! She had a couple of children with her and they'd left buckets, spades and various other bits and pieces nearby. I cropped all that off, also cloned out an old 'washed-up' shoe .... but dithered over that bit of pink stuff 'cos it matched the colour of her plastic bag.

It's a little used area along the edge of the Romney marshes. A fair amount of junk sems to get washed up there so I sometimes like to go along the water's edge to see what I can find.

P.S ...... it's a small bay, so the waves are actually coming inland towards those buildings, which are along another part of the same beach.

I love this Pol except for the bit of sand in the foreground.
It looks a bit washed out (no pun intended)

What I should have said is to apply the same feel (technique) for a set of images. It could be very contrasty and saturated (like the contact sheet), or it could be very light, bright (high key) etc. Maybe we should take turns to do a little demonstration to share our own techniques.
