  • Shetland View

This was taken last Sunday in the north west of Shetland mainland when the sun had decided to come out.

I just downloaded straight with no fixing.

Hi Harry - it looks idyllic but I'm wondering why the bottom left corner is so much darker than the opposite side? Could it be a cloud was passing over and shaded half the view?

Hi Harry, I wondered much the same as Ian. However its my opinion that ideally such scenery needs to be approached in a rather diferent way. What you have is basically a vista type view, yet it needs something to give it some foreground interest, perhaps something to give the viewer a feel for the real landscape of Shetland. A close up of the rock or terrain which then leads on the terrain behind. If it were me I'd love to explore some of those old crofts in the photos, surely this would give us more of a feel for the area.

I'm always banging on about making pictures and not just taking them, and this is the sort of thing that makes a picture, adds interest and feeling to a scene that can sometimes be missing in a pure vista. OK getting off soapbox now

I guess it could do with a point of focal interest, however, I feel that it portrays the ruggedness of the area quite well and the buildings just add to the sense of isolation. Shame about the power cable supports, they do spoil it somewhat. (assuming that's what the 4 uprights are)

Yeah OK I hear what you say Pops, but its just a view at the end of the day and there is little passion for the landscape. I hope Harry doesn't mind me hi-jacking his thread but by way of an illustration of what I mean, here is a shot I took earlier in the year, its basically a track up to an old derelict farm in the Pennine hills, yet by getting in close to the gritstone walls one gets a feel for the land, and the area, and of course the track leading the eye upto the farm.

BTW Danny, I ought to slap your wrists though for messing up Harrys sky, there were enough artefacts to begin with round the skyline without you doing a hatchet job on the sky

As a matter of fact I feel you've raised an important point here.

It's much better to upload a high quality file for critique as that enables others to see the image at the best quality the forum limits allow , approximately 250k and about 700 - 800 pixels.

Small images of low resolution doesn't do justice to images imho.
