Rule of Third

Here's a question, should the rule of thirds work laterally aswell as horizontally, I was looking at crops for this from Oxford, we had a little chat about this and thought id try and follow the rule.............for once



I used the dark tree, the centre spire and the turret on the right for a rough quide to balance the picture.
any thoughts

I don`t quite see the rule of thirds in this, my eye is drawn to the building which is central. or am I missing something?

Hi Mike, looks as if you've cropped already - hence the "letterbox" format - a very effective arrangement which suits this image. Using the thirds 'rule' (don't like the word 'rule' ) works vertically and horizontally. I feel that your picture runs through the middle and might benefit from some off the top OR some off the bottom - hence the thirds rule vertically. Mike

Hi Mike, first off, welcome and hello again, Yes I have already cropped this by just using the centre section of the whole. I am happy with the arrangement as is but will look at alternative crops although I dont think it would benefit from more foreground

The "rule" of thirds works both ways. Think of your image as a grid containing nine sections (3 rows x 3 columns), and you won't go far wrong.

Also remember that rules are for breaking, and that there's far more to effective composition than a single rule.

Im always breaking rules and it gets me into trouble

seriously though have I interpreted the rule right in the above or have I got the wrong end of the stick.......................again

Guess it's all down to personal preference with this shot.
The eye goes straight to the church then right and left and I feel the foreground is a bit boring. Just been playing and I cropped right up to the small hedgerow which placed those people in the foreground and I found it more pleasing.

I just tried that crop, it does give a different perspective to the scene but I cant get on with it, like you said its a personal thing and I had the advantage of the seeing it. It did help show the the building in perspective to the people better though.

Are you using Lightroom Mike? The crop tool in the Develop model has a superb thirds grid that appears when you crop. You can position key elements of your image on the thirds intersections.

Hi,
This image does no appear to follow the so called rule of thirds, the main area of interest is or appears to be central, I do not usually mess with other peoples images but I hope you do not mind, I have tried several crops on your image and the following i feel is a better ballance for my tastes, and is purely my own opinion. It is a lovely scene anyway.

This image does no appear to follow the so called rule of thirds, the main area of interest is or appears to be central, I do not usually mess with other peoples images but I hope you do not mind, I have tried several crops on your image and the following i feel is a better ballance for my tastes, and is purely my own opinion. It is a lovely scene anyway.

Tinka I came up with the exact same crop. Was waiting for the light in my computer room to drop so that I could view it better before posting. We all love the Sun to shine but not directly on our monitors.

Oddly enough the Rule of thirds was a bit of an issue for me this morning. I had to take some shots of the Parkinson Building in Leeds. Its the iconic building of Leeds University. The problem as you will see here is that the clocktower is central. and its difficult to get a thirds composition. The problem was compounded by building works on the bottom left area and several rather unhelpful street lights This shot is straight out of the camera virtually, but when I tell you that one of my shots taken this morning is intended for the side of a bus, you can imagine that clocktower is even more of an issue

Hi all,
Well i thought I understood the ides of thirds, but now I'm slightly confused.....No im very confused, i thought it was foreground, subject then background or am I being a numpty again!
