  • Maheno wreck on Fraser Island

I took a number of pics of a wreck called the Maheno on 75 mile beach on Fraser Island! I missed some amazing shots of waves crashing through & spilling over the wreck because of the time it takes to compose the shot! This one concentrated on framing the wave between a skeleton part of the wreck, what do you think could be done to improve or get better shots when on a tourbus & time is the essence?

    Hi Jocelyn,
A great photograph, you have captured the detail and the wave action superbly, I don't really have any pointers, I am always under the pressure of time as I am normally out with the family and playing catch up. I just take the photographs if I feel the scene warents it, like you I do try to compose my shots, If you are on a tour bus the the pressure must be greater, I feel you have captured a terrific image under the circumstances. As I am typing The only suggestion I could make is to take in Raw mode to try to ballance the hi_lights, midtone and shadows useing your software during post processing. To me this looks fine in this particular image, especially where the wave is breaking over the wreck.

Well after looking at your galerie and the comp entry I think you have got the knack of composing and takeing images of the sea off to a fine art, in my opinion they are superb.

Pretty nice shot you have there Jocelyn, I agree with the high shutter capturing those waves. Although, I feel that if you had moved the camera slightly to the right and shot portrait, you could have captured a more powerful image without the left hand side 'cluttering' (IMO). Have you also considered editing the photo with Curves in a program such as Photoshop if you have it?

Nice work anyway, especially considering you were under the time constraint of not wanting the shot to disappear.

Thanks Tinka & Matt for your comments, much appreciated! I did shoot in Raw, but as the Memory card was full, I had to get pics put on a DVD by a camera hse shop in the village I stayed at! Once downloaded to the computer, I tried processing my pics in Photoshop CS2, but wasn't that happy with the saturation, so I used Paintshop 9 instead, using the One Stop Fix, which does a heap of things simultaneously & I was more satisfied! Somehow & for some reason beyond my comprehension my CS2 colours or saturation seem washed out & dull! I also use Paintshop 9 to do my borders as I wouldn't know how in CS2!

The blue colour is beautiful and the whole image looks wonderfully fresh and invigorating. I like the pattern of the blurred background breakers but agree with Matt that the foreground blur is a bit distracting.

Thanx for your comments! I will have a look at further cropping of foreground to see if that works!

Another shot perhaps, but I don't think it has the same impact

                Hi Jocelyn,
This is another super image in its own right, but I still prefer the first.
