I have been lurking about for months now, reading the threads in the forums and viewing the images in the galleries, but never posted anything. So today, I'm taking the big step and going to post a couple of macro/close-up shots in here. Although the DOF is off a little, I still kinda like them both.

Hello ex-lurker
It is tough deciding to join in and post some of your work for others to critique - but that initial worry quickly passes
I very much like the composition of the flower. The insect doesn't really work for me because it's not facing the camera.
But above all, both images are way over-sharpened. In the insect one this has resulted in tell-tale ghosting or halo on the sharp detail boundaries. On the flower, you can see an almost mosaic effect where the detail has started to break up. Did you use Photoshop SmarSharpen to sharpen these by any chance?
I'd like to see a version of the flower with mor subtle sharpening.
The flower looks like a Gerbera to me. Can't quite make out the actual point of focus and there is noise in the background which is more evident on the stem.
On the good side I like the slight tilt you have for the composition and the dark background compliments the flower colour nicely.
