  • Fun with Kids

This is my first venture into the world of the Photo Critique forum but if I am serious about this stuff I need to know what others think. This was a session with a 4 month old. Pretty happy kid all in all. I think I got several decent shots. This is what I thought was one of the better and more fun ones. Interested in what others think. (hope the attachent works)

I much prefer the second colour shot. I'm not a fan of the beads in the first shot, they are too much of a distraction for me. I find the composition and crop of the second much more pleasing and as you have perfect eye contact it really hits the spot.

It looks as though you used a single main light, but it would be nice to know exactly what your lighting set up was.

I'm inclined to agree that the picture with eye contact has that extra edge which makes it hit the spot more immediately

I have to add that both shots are captivating and both shots hit the spot for me. I can see what Stephen means about the beads now that he's raised the issue. However, the beads didn't especially bother as I saw them as an indication that the little charmer is a girl. A girl who is also modest enough to dress herself before her photo session.

          Hi,
Two really superb portraits in my opinion, the beads do not bother me inthe first, in fact it they add a little charming childish humor to the image, I have to say that the second color shot just has the edge, purely for the eye contact . Even though the head has been scalped

            two cracking shots there!

I agree whats been said about the beeds being a distraction.

Although the second is the best, next tim i think including the head, and maybe the hands would improve an already super shot.

Can't agree with you there Ben, for me the shot has been improved by the crop and the left side weighting. In this instance its not necessary to see the hands and the top of the head IMO

                Re: Fun with Kids

Thanks for the input. The lighting was a single light on the my left hand side. It is a fairly large 5 ft, round soft box about 5-6 ft from the young Brooklyn and two lights on either side of the white paper background. The main light was set to F8 with the background set to F16.

I liked the beads to show it was a young lady and to add a little humor to the shot.

                Thanks,

                  Re: Fun with Kids

I really like to use a lot of off center (rule of thirds) weighting in my shots. In this case it required to cut the top of her head as I was trying to keep her eyes in the top 1/3 of the frame. Just my personal taste I think.

I understand what you mean about the hands but if I remember correctly they were hiden by the sheep skin anyway.

                  Thanks,
