Looking at others taking some nice close ups of animals
thought I would give it a go, buts its come out not quite the pzzazz others have.

I suspect you were much too close, probably closer than the minimum focusing distance of the lens.
Try standing further back and fill the frame with the dog .... ie fill the visual frame of what you see through the viewfinder.
Looks like the point of focus is just behind the dogs nose. I agree, too close, nothing wrong with the dogs color though.
Dogs, and other animals are about as hard to photograph as kids. I had to follow my new visitor around for about 10 minutes, to get him still. I would have gotten closer, but everything within a certain range is subject to chewing, and total destruction. Like the camera lens.
