the inspection

hello everyone!
Ian- i can't find anything that limits the number of images a post may contain. if i've overstepped my bounds please let me know. i'll be happy to withdraw some. also, i wasn't sure where to post this as these were not taken with anything in mind other than to document an inspection before the changing of the guard at the 'tomb of the unknown soldier' in arlington national cemetery. however, please feel free to critique. i may go back tomorrow evening after work...i'm sure your suggestions will prove useful.

pay no attention to my borders...my teenage son was exploring PS and decided to help me out . i should have him posting here...his photographic eye is coming along nicely.

Wonderful set of photograhs with great contrast. Those expressionless faces have been captured perfectly and leave no doubt as to the seriousness of their duties. The third one, showing the weapon inspection, in particular.

Excellent series, as usual.

The images seem to be just a touch too dark with some loss of tone and detail in the black areas. My screen is calibrated regularly, last time was just a couple of days ago so I opened one or two of them in CS to look more closely.

They're slightly better in PS but I felt they were still just a tad too dark in places - some loss of detail on the sleeve and jacket in places.

Maybe the dark toning was intentional? Maybe I need to re-do my screen?

In the third one, where he is looking at the camera - was that just still part of his routine or did he pose for you?

Pol - there is nothing wrong with your monitor...i was going for a 'high key' effect. i believe i may have taken it too far. thanks for pointing that out.

Ian - #3 was not a pose. it looks like he's looking at me, but i'm sure not. he had just wiped an area of the gun and was checking his glove for traces of dust/dirt. i think i like #3 best.

devilgas - i'll try to get the color version up this evening.

Hi Jonmikal;
I agree with pols view but they are great images anyway, I'm sure you have the originals anyway for a re work if you feel so inclined.
I am sure that in the third image the soldier is looking strait at you and giving you a disguised two fingered salute , just to show you what he thinks of photographers.
