Kenmare Estuary,SW.Ireland

This was taken on a recent visit to S.Ireland and on this day we were doing the 'Ring of Kerry' drive. This shot was taken on the Southern coast of the Ring looking out over the Kenmare Estuary to the Beara Peninsula with line of the Slieve Miskish Mountains on the horizon. I was attracted by the waves crashing against the rocks, the sense of depth in the scene and the lovely cloud formations over the mountains. (I must say it looks far better as a print!!). Comments welcome.

Yes, I agree with Stephen a lovely landscape; the sea is alive with detail, action and clean, fresh colour. If there is a quibble, some of the lighter surf highlights are blown, but it's a relatively minor observation.

Thanks Stephen & Ian for comments. I agree Ian about the blown out highlights in the foam, I was aware of it. Is there any way to recover a bit of detail there as it was taken as a Raw image. ?

Fabulous location and scenery and I reckon you definitely did it justice with this lovely shot!

As for those blown highlights - have you tried using the highlight and shadow preview tools in ACR? If you happen to have CS3, there's also a 'recovery' slider tool you can use to retrieve blown highlights (which are clearly marked in red when you activate the small 'highlight preview' arrow in CS3 ACR.

Yes agree with Pol, but also Lightroom helps a lot with recovering highlights

Yes, I've just been away off to confirm that with David as he has Lightroom whereas I have CS3 and we don't use each others' computers or software...... or someone around here might get hurt.

I also have a screen shot here (compressed to a width of 900 pixels) - showing the tools and the clipped highlights ...... just in case it might be helpful for Dennis or anyone else.

Hi,
A superb land/seascape, the water disapearing around the headland and the cloud formation, take you deep into the image, If I scroll the image on screen to lose the green grass at the bottom there is another version which I feel is a very slight inprovement in composition, but just my opinion.

Always lovely to see shots from my homeland and this is a very nice landscape indeed. I dont mind too much the blown whites here but I was wondering if a fair bit of sharpening has been added.
Parts of County Kerry (Dunquin/Dingle/Ballyferriter) are my favourite places on earth and I spent many happy times in those areas.

Hi Tom - Glad you liked the picture and it gave you a reminder of your homeland. I agree with you about the blown highlights, I do feel that it in a shot like this it is unavoidable and does not really matter as it adds feeling to the surf. Yes - we did have a nice time in Ireland, we were enthralled by the beauty of the scenery and were very fortunate with the weather in early May. It was our first visit and were particularly enchanted with the friendlyness of everyone we met. Nothing seemed too much trouble at the places where we stayed and with people when we stopped for directions. Unfortunately we had only booked a week, but we have promised to go back again for longer next time and to visit other parts.

Hi Dennis,

A great landscape (or seascape?). I'd agree with Tom that it looks as if it has been a little over sharpened, the sea in particular seems to have an exaggerated contrast. May have just been the sunny conditions though. Whatever, it's still a picture I'd have in my album.
