    Re: Watching and waiting

I like the close crop and that patient, fixed gaze which is a characteristic of seasoned fisherfolk. The composition is nicely balanced and the colours seem to be spot on too.

If I had to be picky, I'd suggest the inclusion of some fishing gear to better illustrate what the fella is doing (although I realise the crop would have to be less intimate) and some of the highlights (top of cap and back of sweater) appear to be over-exposed a little.

However I think the shot works well and I like it

I agree with your findings, now there's a first, unfortunately to include his fishing gear would have meant moving round behind him and I would have lost that expression. I own up to lightening this a bit too much in an effort to lift his face out of the shadow. I did try for another shot but he noticed me and the expression was gone.

I love the expression on the man's face and the tight crop. I like his position within the frame and the reeds/grasses are superb as a full backdrop. The top of his cap is a bit burnt out, but I think if it mattered you could probably darken it a bit.

Overall I think it is a lovely photo Ron.

Nice capture, I agree about the inclusion of fishing gear.

I like the reeds and their reflections as well. Super image Ron.

I like this a lot. I'd forget about the fishing references - make the viewer wonder! You probably couldn't have avoided the hat being a little burned out, though a processed RAW file might have helped. Some skilful 'burning' might be the answer

Talk about confusing - 'dodging and burning' - I had to look it up to remember which was which!

Thanks to everyone thats commented on my picture. I do appreciate your views. I intend to produce this picture in a frame and give it to the guy in the picture. There's a little storey that led to this being taken. Back in the late 50's, when I was serving in the army, I was stationed at Bicester. During that time a comrade had a fatal work accident. Having retired and moved to Suffolk, I met up with the chap in the picture. It transpires that he too was at Bicester and in fact he was the ambulance driver that attended that tragic accident. We must have rubbed shoulders that day, only to meet again all these years later. He now accompanies me on a lot of fishing trips. Small world me thinks.

Hi Ron, I've not added to comments on your photo, I'd simply be reinforcing what others have said. Suffice to say I like the photo.

If you had not mentioned in the first instance about him fishing, no one would have mentioned about the need to see fishing tackle

However the 'provenance' you have given above somehow adds to the image. We now not only see a man, who may or may not be fishing, but also a man who we see having some sort of bond with you through an event that happened years ago. It is indeed a small world.

                    Re: Watching and waiting

Yes, a superb capture all round, yes we know he in all probability is fishing, but what is he thinking? behind that hand Is he smiling to himself? something appears to amuse him, perhaps a thought, a memory, or a pint or two later on.

                      Re: Watching and waiting

Well, I'm not sure whether that is an expression of concentration, or that he is lost in his own thoughts, but your composition is such that it draws me in to actually wonder which it is. I like the way I feel I could put my hand on his shoulder too. The reeds do look good against the duck-egg blue of the water, they give the whole photograph a very restful quiet feel.

Update. Thanks all for your comments on this one. I have now presented this framed to him, and he and his wife are over the moon. All's well that ends well.

A fab shot. The background is one in a million. To me he's a bird watcher sitting patiently watching the mating behaviour of pair of coots just beyond the reeds.
