    Re: From the beach

    Hi Mike

I think that they both work, but I prefer the first one as there is more interest in the background.

My only slight "mention" would be that I think the jetty is sloping up to the right.

The lobster pot is nice and sharp with subtle colours. I also like the big pebbles - perhaps a little more colour could be brought out, but hey I like it.

The idea of the second one is OK, but I think you could have probably got a sharper shot of it with all the veins and strata? running through it.

I am not trying to Jump your thread but this is one I posted recently, which as you can see is a similar idea.

Perhaps that is why I like yours.

      Re: From the beach

I like the first one very much, the net on the pot really grabs the attention along with those big pebbles. Possibly because of the muted grey tones it has a lovely warm summer feel to it. I like the signs of activity in the background too. It says summer holidays.

Can't decide whether I like the second one or not. It does mimic the first in a way and is an interesting stone, but for me there is perhaps not enough to keep my interest.

        Hi,
thanks both for your comments, Autumn you are right the horizon is slightly sloping to one side , I hadn't noticed that, I do prefer the lobster pot but feel the stone could have been better which is a shame as in real life it was a nice colour and texture

          Re: From the beach

Hi Mike, I quite like the two photos, though the first more than the second, mainly I suppose for similar reasons to Autumn. ie. the foreground interest in the second is somewhat cancelled out by the background.

You are of course using a recognised technique of finding foreground interest, but if I may say so the foreground is dominating the photo in both cases and really I would suggest that it shouldn't. In the first image the lobster pot is rather too in your face, its too central and doesn't really let the eye wander too much to the background, the foreground has become the focus of the picture.

I think a landscape format may have been better with the pot on the left and more of the jetty to the right, perhaps taking up 2/3rds of the scene. A little more depth of field would also put more emphasis on the background, but you would still have the foreground interest.

Dunno, was there any lobsters in it?

I love the view point. I must try getting my fat a**e on the ground.
