  • Critique on Crop please

    Hi All,

This is a picture of a fly I have taken, but I am not 100% certain of the crop.

This is a composite picture of two shots with the focus on different parts of the fly, then blendid to give a better depth of field. The composition is as it was out of the camera, but I feel it needs a tighter crop, but I just cant get it to look right!

Feel free to download the image, and repost to demonstrate what you think.

    Thanks!

    Ben

    Hi Ben

Not too sure about the photograph in total. I know you have gone to a lot of trouble but detail is lost under the flies tummy.

It is not all that sharp and I think perhaps not photographed from the best angle (for me).

With regard to the crop. Assuming the fly was a real belter, this is how I would crop. You need the negative space on the left.

      Hi Audrey,

I have to say I was suprised by your comments on the sharpness. Its pretty spot on to my eyes.

As for the crop, I see what your doing, but didnt like losing the shadow under the leaf, as I thought that was part of the attraction to the shot, hence my dilema!

Thanks for posting, and I will be interested to see what others think of your crop.

This is only my opinion of course, but I think your crop puts the fly too central in the frame with the dark area too overpowering. Audrey's version does away with the shadow, which I too think makes an interesting point in the photograph, and somehow the proportions seem wrong. I added a little more to the left hand side, then cropped the top to reduced the darkened area. I believe it now looks as though the fly is moving in and down onto the leaf. I do like the way you have captured the colour on its body, it almost looks attractive there.
