  • Rays of Light & Rainbow

    Hello all!

After a long dreary day of rain the sun finally broke through the clouds and I got two pretty good pictures. What do you think? Also, can anyone tell me how to upload without losing so much image quality? These pictures did not start out so grainy.

Hi Jennifer, I am sure it has been asked before, but how are you reducing the size of your pictures?

the pictures are rather large at 1000 pixels in width, and yet the file size is just 35kb?

I generally upload my pictures at a maximum of 700pixels in width, and try and keep the file size as close to the 250kb limit.

I reckon the method you are using is almost certainly the main contributing factor to why your shots are losing image quality.

Anyway, love your pictures here, lots of atmosphere!

My only suggestion would be to see more ground on both pictures, on the first a little less sky from the top, and a little more ground would be good.

On the second one, it would be great to see all the cows as well as that rainbow.

Hi Jennifer, I'd pretty much agree with Ben. I usually size to 800pix wide and a file size between 200-250kb. If you are compressing the files to 35kb then you will get degrading of the image.

Also I notice you have taken the shot at ISO 400 and 4000th sec. Now if you had reduced it to ISO 100 you could still have used 1000th sec which would have given you a better result in terms of grain and those smooth Canon tones

        Ben,

On the first picture the main subject was the rays coming from the cloud therefore I chose to only include a small amount of the ground which was a mistake. Not having a wide angle lens I was not sure what to do at the time. As for the second one I was gonna take the cows out but was unsure! I had my ISO set at 400 was that too high?

There is a rule that is a useful guidline for photographers, and that is the rule of thirds. In this instance, I would advise to have one third of the picture as the ground, and two thirds sky, you would still be able to get those wonderful sun rays, but also maintain a balanced photograph.

As for ISO, always try and use as low an ISO as possible, the higher the ISO, the more grain will become evident.

By the way, how do you upload your pictures.......if you were able to answer the question regarding the uplload etc, we may be able to resolve the issue your having with picture degredation.

            Cheers!

            Ben

              Hi Jennifer

I have to agree with both Stephen and Ben with regard to composition. Take notice of them regarding the ISO.

I am just popping in to say how much I like the first one and of course it would be improved with a little less sky and more ground.

I would also like to see the cows in the second one. What I find interesting about your shots are that they are unique. I can't think of anyone else who posts images of a cattle range. I like the grey metal building (What is it?) with the rainbow shining on it.

Whilst its generally a good guide, the rule of thirds need not be strictly adhered to. The position of the land in the first photo does not bother me at all, infact I think it works rather well.

I hope you dont me having a tamper, but this is how I would have presented it.

                  Hope you like the idea.

                      Autumn,

That is a grain bin. Farmers use them to put different kinds of grain into them. We generally put seed corn and soybeans in them.

Just to add my two pennorth. I think your first photograph has a lovely feel to it with the light on the horizon - super colours. Afraid I too would go for a little more ground. The second one made me smile with the end of the rainbow pointing to the silo - is it not golden corn in there? There's a lovely clear light with that one, the metal looks good against the blue/grey sky, and I didn't even notice the cows at first glance.

                          Blithe,

You win the Pot of Gold! It is Corn! I told a friend Today that most (not all!) people from the city would not understand the rainbow going into the silo. 15 years ago I was still a city girl myself! Back then of course I would not have understood the meaning of the picture.

I really like your pics Jennifer, but in my opinion they would improve with a little saturation increase. If you look at what Ben did will confirm that I think!
