Hi Ben, I'm pretty sure I know what you have done here and it's a good attempt, but this is the Critique board and I know you're looking for feedback that should be critical if necessary and so I'm not comfortable with the blurred edges to the fur as it doesn't really match up to the depth of field visible in the cat's face.

But ignoring all that, the cat's expression is super and I think it's an amazing looking feline; what breed is it?

A lovely and unusually relaxing pose; i agree with Ian about the edges but it is not enough to detract from my enjoyment.
        Cats are just incredible.

          Hi All,

          Thanks for the comments.

Ian...this is the reason why I put it here, and not 'eye of the camera,' so thanks for the honest feedback.

Do you have any suggestions to do this better?

he was actually on the mother in laws dining room table, (needless to say she wasnt happy about him being on there and was immediatly ticked off once I got my shots! )

          He is a Burmilla.

The method I used was a combination of selecting the area, and brightenning, using diffuse glow, and a slight tweak with a history brush to bring back some of the edgges.

          the background was very cluttered.

Burmilla? Not heard of one of those before. Sounds expensive!

I think you need a very good extraction tool. The two best on the market are the one built into Photoshop CS3 and the Vertus Fluid Mask - they are doing a 30-day trial of their latest beta release - well worth it.

Haha....yes indeed, of course I just take pictures.

However, some shots need that little bit extra something to make the difference between a snapshot, and a finished article.

The expression on Josh's face here just lent itself to spending a little more time to make it something worth of a mantlepiece. The end result, in my opinion was OK, though not by any means perfect, and thats the reason I posted it here.

Can I ask Paul, do you 'tweak' or change your photographs at all, or are you of the camp that it should all be done 'in-camera'?

                  Ian,

A Burmilla is a cross between a Chinchilla and a Burmese, and all cat breeds are pretty pricey!

My last cat was an Abysinnian, and he was well over 100pounds, and that was some years ago.....(with some discount as he was a runt)
Nowadays you are probably looking at between 300-500pounds for a pure bred.

I didn't know you could cross a chinchilla with a cat

Seriously, though, Julia's Dad has a Maincoon - very fluffy, very smart and very expensive!

Yep, they certainly are! I have wanted a Maine Coon for a long time, generally they are one of the largest cats as well. I dont recall seeing any pictures Ian?

                        Hi Ben

I agree with Ian, but the bright white background is the part of the picture I find most disturbing. Not sure what could be done here other than fill it with a neutral colour.

I like the positioning of the cat.

Sukie (her everyday name - the official one is hideously complicated!) is quite an independent soul and no lap-cat, so she's quite difficult to pin down. But you have now set me a challenged

I'm just a a snapper mate, but hoping to learn

I must admit I stick my snaps in photochop and twaek the levels and maybe clone out some unwanted bits. I'm pretty good at restoring old photos, well I think I am! lol
