  • Second attempt with studio lights

    Dear All,

Two very different examples using studio lights. I say lights but I mean light. I followed the advice and critique given after my first post and only used one light. The subjects were in a light tent and I used a reflector.

    Comments and critique welcome.

    Best Regards

    Josh

Not a critique Josh as I don't know anything about flash, but I love your flowers. They are just bursting out of the frame. The exposure, detail and colour are superb. I can't quite make my mind up about the dark base but neither can I suggest an alternative atm.

The little cake still looks good, but I am not sure about the shadow and the reflection. I don't know what should be there. I know I liked the little cakes on your previous set. I think they were the third pic.

I like the subtlety of the lighting in the first one, Josh. The composition of the second is great too (excellenty idea!), but I'm a bit undecided about the shadow?

Re: Second attempt with studio lights

I like the presentation of the 4 Gerbera heads but can't make my mind up about the orange top and black bottom.
The outer edges of the top petals appear to be a bit overdone but......it could well be an illusion bought on by that bright orange colour.
Unless taking them in their natural environment I mostly use an all black background with flowers as I feel it throws them out more.
Maybe you can try one with all orange and one with all black.

Re: Second attempt with studio lights

Thanks all for the critique. As regards the flowers, the black was actually the vase they came in. I think you are right that some will like it and other won't, I was drawn to posting this shot as I liked the strong red, the strong black mixed with the softer colours of the flowers.

Going onto the cakes. I don't like the shadows either but I left them in there as they were a product of using one light with a reflector. I suspect I had the light positioned too far to the back and perhaps not high enough, giving the long shadow.

Here is a version with no shadow. (not clever lighting I'm afraid just the photoshop )

best regards and thanks. I really do learn from the critique

Must say that the cake shot is much improved without the shadow.

It's an improvement, but because I can still see the grey area where the shadow was, it's not quite right for me, yet.
