  • Original for SALVAGED and re-edit

    Hi all,
Here is a re-work of the "SALVAGED post" image of the elderly lady spinning wool, this is the best that I have been able to achieve. the Re-work is based on comments and sugestions by Pol and others in the first post.
I have also posted the original image as taken, as George (Archangel) requested. Can it be improved further?

It is amazing what you have been able to get out of the that very dark shot although I am still troubled by what looks like a lot of noise on the floor and skin.

      Hi Spl,
Thanks for looking and commenting, the floor the floor is correct, it is speckled as seen in the image, it is like it has been laid with pebbles in the mix, That is not to say that there are not artifacts in the floor area, as there are across the image. I have been unable to eliminate what appears to be artifacts on the ladies face. Perhaps they are freckles

It just goes to show how much can be lifted out of an under-exposed image. Over-exposure is another matter, though.

As for the picture - it has a rather spooky air about! Is the lady real or a model in an exhibit?

            Dave,

I just got back from a 3-day gateway over to my country house, where I was doing some wall to wall furniture assembling in my room.
Give me sometime to rest and I will put some effort in your photo.

            George

              Hi Ian and all,
Thanks for looking and your comments,
Yes the lady is for real, a real living breathing person, her husband was dressed for the same era demonstrateing Tudor toys, it was in a national trust property in licolnshire, I forget the name of the castle even though it was only last week. I will look it up and post later if you wish.

Re: Original for SALVAGED and re-edit

just had a very quick play in photoshop. duplicate the base layer. change the layer blend mode to screen. repeat this process a further 6 times (8 layers in total).
apply a channel mixer adjustment layer with:
                  mono ticked
                  red 24%
                  green 80%
                  blue 28%

                  and i got this....

very quick and dirty (literally 1 minute) so could be refined a lot with masking etc, but i think the noise on the face is more acceptable.

                      Dave,

Here is my rework attempt to your photo.
I could do better if I had the original size shot, post process it and reduce it into some decent printable size shot.
I left it in color as you can still give the monotone effect of your wish, if you wish to do so.

                        Hi Dave(devilgas),
I like your effort, the noise is reduced, will have to have another try.
                        Many thanks.

Many thanks for your efforts, it is a vast inprovement on mine, and very much appreciated, can you let me know how you did it? I don't know how to get the original full size to you, the forum is restricted regarding the size we can post.
                          A Great result,

                            Dave,

I use Paint Shop Pro and I don't know if you use the same program or Photoshop. Anyway in Paint Shop Pro there is an option to use "Fill Flash" on a photo. I did that 3 times in the row with different strengths each time and then used Noise Ninja to take of some noise, adjusted contrast, plus some other and left the final result in that level of light intensity as not to lose some of the mystery/magic of the room darker environment.

I will send you a pm with my e-mail if you wish to send me the original photo to experiment further on it.

                            George
