  • Field of waves

Another rework from '04 This was the first time I had witnessed such a scene. I think it was a field of potatoes but the plastic strips reminded me almost waves coming towards the shore. The sun low in the sky creating the effect of water added to the wave effect. This was shot on a Canon 10D 17mm at f.11

Any comments welcome, does it work for you?

Argh, that dreadful plastic, even though it does an excellent job - but you have used it to your advantage. It does look like waves but not entirely and begs me to look deeper into and on to the horizon, where there looks to be a horizon over a 'real' sea. The long diamond of the clouds surrounding the sun are almost putting the sun on display. I like the dark furrows and the silhouetted distance, emphasising the sun; it does shine but looks a little cold to me.

Very cool image, I reckon that would be a winner in the salon, almost better than your big wheel. One day I may be able to take pics like these. please...

I'm struggling to get past my first impression here.......
i.e. why is it so dark with the sun being high in the sky.

Very clever Stephen. I also wonder why the field is so dark. Interesting pic though.

I suspect when Stephen shot this that all the foreground may have been a bit underexposed due to the strong sun behind. I may be talking BS here but I feel Stephen choose not to brighten it up too much and leave what is to me a nice eerie type of light.
The whole field looks very like the limestone landscape of the Burren region in Co. Clare. Great shot indeed.

Hi Blithe and thanks for your comments, much appreciated. You are also quite perceptive in that you do see a glimpse of sea in the distance

You are pretty much correct Tom and thanks for your comments.

It is in fact on the Ards peninsula just South of Belfast. The sea you can catch a glimpse of is Strangford Lough, then the land beyond.

Interesting shot Stephen! Is the plastic covering some kind of crops....what sprung to mind was potatoes 'cos its Ireland, but they wouldn't cover potato plants would they??

I wonder if this would work even better in mono? It's a fairly bleak scene, the likes of which often lend themselves to mono, and if there is a fault with the picture, it's the rather dirty misty sky near the horizon - which would not be so intrusive in mono.

I must admit I thought it was some kind of icey winterscape

                      Hi,
I like this image, the eirie effect produced by the light and cool almost cold desolate atmosphere, in a strange way, a beautiful image, the sort of mood produced by moonlight, a strange compelling image.

                        Hi Stephen,

Works for me. The initial glance says "reflections on waves", then the un-ease sets in and you notice that the "waves" are behaving in a very odd manner. Certainly makes you look twice (at least it did me).
