I dont often comment on images posted, In principle I like the idea of this one, Its a shame the the heron was not larger and the reflection forms an almost straight line above the subject. The background of the image creates a two tone effect which causes me to flick between the top and bottom of the image.
But in essence its a good capture

No problem, the url you pasted in needed the img tags either end ie [img]url[/img] You can simply copy the ubb code under your image in the gallery if you like.

Thanks I was limited to getting closer, this is a bird sanctuary, it was shot from verge on side of road, any entrances were too far away for me to enter, as it was I had to use 400 ISO to get extra focal length on camera, an ISO I very rarely use, if ever. I thank you for your comments but you have no idea of the sanctuary or problems, I would have liked to have a large version of the heron but under the circumstances this would not have been possible.

There you go Will, the problem with offering critique on anothers image, there is always an explanation that is not always obvious to the observer. Some images have to be captured just as they are and therefore, in that respesct should be accepted as that, but what others can offer is an opinion when asked for that might point out something not imediately obvious to the original poster. this has been an asset to me in the past.

It shows how difficult it is then to get good shots of birds such as this. Preparation, patience and stealth are no doubt some of the key things.

Actually Will, I'm a little puzzled with your comment about using iso400 to allow you to get the extra focal length. Can you explain?

Is this a crop of the original? I ask because I was thinking that if it was the full frame, there should be plenty of scope to crop a little in order to see more detail.

I thought exactly the same thing Stephen , but on thinking about it i guess the higher ISO would give you a higher shutter speed , so that with longer focal lengths you're less likely to get shake , (the focal length v shutter speed formula) yes,no, Will

Nice shot, I too am currently frustrated by not being able to get closer to many of my subjects, I know and understand the horror of having to take a picture without the right equipment, saying all that imo the heron is too centred, and also too far away. I know getting him in flight like that is an achievement. Maybe play with your levels in PS and darken the image up a bit

Judging by the general environment, I suspect it wasn't the Dungeness (Walland Marsh) RSPB sanctuary. I'm guessing it's more likely to have been shot on or near the sanctuary down beside Rye harbour. (The one deep down the narrow road alongside the harbour, almost opposite the holiday park - then a fair walk down beyond the gates).

Funnily enough i was down in Rye yesterday but only had time for a cup of coffee and a quick stroll , but still just avoided being killed by hells angels

I have Panosonic DMC FZ7 and you are quite right I misread the settings in the handbook, it applied to flash range.

No! Bob, just up the road from me, noticed there is a young Heron on the lake, it is a bird sanctuary.

Thanks for your reply, but I failed air crew in the RAF because they said I was colour blind, so what appears ok to me perhaps is not what others see.
