    Hello all!

I thought I would try my hand at some black & white photography.
Comments are welcome! I gave this picture a soft touch, Is it too much?

No, it's not too soft. It's just right!
And it's a really nice picture.

The very pale grass gives this picture a lovely Infra-red feel, the softness is fine, such a natural pose and gentle atmosphere.
My only slight worry is the dark foliage down the side; I find my eye is constantly drawn to it.
Some cloning or copy and pasting in Photoshop could probably sort that out.

I bet Mum loves the picture.

        Hi jennifer,
A wonderfuly soft and gentle image, full of innocence and wonderment, the conversion, processing, softness and presentation is spot on in my opinion.
        A lovely subject and result.

I really do think this a wonderful picture, but as I said in my earlier post the tree did worry me a little, so I have removed it and thought at the same time a slight toning may add that something extra to the picture.

              What do you think?

It is a gentle picture of a young child. I quite like the foliage and think is helps to describe the picture. Without it, leaves me wondering what the child has in her hands.

I just love the dimples in her little hands. They don't last too long, so it is nice to have a picture of them.

I see your reasoning, but the trees are stronger in the image than the child also on the very edge, therefore take the attention away from the child and out of the picture. The child is so absolutely charming in the frame, our attention should not be diverted.
Does it really matter what the little one is curious about, wondering I think actually adds to the picture, the hands are obviously holding something, not knowing can make you think.

Yes they were stronger Patrick, but I have faded them a little so they don't appear to be quite so intrusive, and yet it hasn't altered the original photograph too much.

I don't know whether it is any better, just another view.

                      Hi,

Jennifer, A really super picture .

Patrick, I can see where you're coming from but I feel the plant helps to "fix" the child in the picture, without it I just don't get the same feeling. Lightening as in Audrey's also doesn't do it for me.

                        Hi all,
an interesting dialogue, but I feel that the original image is far superior to either of the two (pretty good) edits, plus the original is the image that was visualised and created by jennifer, The love for her child is embodied in that creation and somehow comes across when viewed by others "IMO" In editing by others it loses something and is no longer Jennifers creation, it becomes just another "very good" image of a child, an anonamous image, the sort you see time and again for sale in superstores etc: as prints.

I have to agree with you Tinka, it was only an experiment as Patrick was trying it without the foliage at all - the original as Jenifer took it is beautiful.

The original is perfect. The bush in no way draws me away from the child. The child actually has a twig in her hands and the bush I feel is an integral part of the image.

loads of good debate not sure how much I can add. Except to say my vote would be for the original with a hint of toning. Great composition and subject matter.

                              best regards
