Tom Windows has a screen saver just like that. I do like these pictures. I find them very interesting and spend quite some time analyzing all the little nooks and crannies. This one is nice and sharp and you have selected a very suitable boarder to go with it. Thanks for posting it, I will now go and spend some more time scrutinizing.

Thanks Ron. Obviously it seems that it is not to most peoples taste here so it is extra nice when someone does express a liking for it. It is actually one of my favourites from the outing.

I can actually see how this works as a screensaver. If one of the parameters of a "good" picture is ability to hold interest then this picture has it. There is so much to see. What can easily be dismissed as a bundle of pipes actually lends itself to much more creative thinking.

Where do those pipes go? what did they carry, who built them? why that design? etc etc. stretches the mind

Tom, it could be you are right about it not being to most peoples taste, and presumably because the scene is not something you could say is a thing of beauty then people find it hard to add a comment.

TBH my first thought when I saw it was that it reminded me of the Windows screensaver, but then Ron mentioned the same thing so I didn't bother. Josh also summed up something that I often feel when I see an image, and what makes it s good one, ie it conjures up many questions. I'm struggling then to add much more thats constructive, except that as a high contrast mono image it could become quite graphical, and therefore have a new dimension to it.

What sometimes makes me wonder is why some threads in the same forum. ie Critique, can be up for some time and not get many views, then another one appears and gets loads of views within a very short space of time. Yet the view count is, as I understand it, unique views and not repeat views, so hows that happen then

Hi Tom,
This one is nicely taken and I presume this was taken at the same plant as the previous thread. Yet at a glance I felt some differences and IMHO it is because of the narrower composition. I do not know whether it is because you chose a longer focal length or just cropped. In this narrower composition, however, it is hard for me to realize that this is an abandoned plant - which is so important for me.

A non-expert of plant engineering like me might just think this is another plant now/still in operation. In that sense this one tells less about the place than the previous one. Such an interpretation like decay, condolence or sympathy for the deterioration/abandonment of once a mighty/vivid place - these factors are hard to feel from this particular one picture IMHO.

Please do not take me wrong. I think the composition of this picture is nice in the sense that it captures the scene in sharper focus.

In the above comments, I meant a sort of mental composition of the picture. Not easy to explain but a compostion necessary to convey the important messages - this seems to be more proper composition in this case.

In order to reduce/or preferably avoid misunderstanding due to my poor verbal explanation skills ,let me put it a bit differently.

The first pic you posted the other day = a mental/imaginary landscape interpreted by photographer and that also can be well sensed by viewers. Gives more room to viewers for further interpretation. Something like a start of a nice novel.

this new one - more physical landscape than psychological. Good for recording what you see as accurately as possible. will be viewed more from pure photographic skills viewpoints. If you intend to explain more about this particular plant, then it could be one photos necessary for that purpose.

My personal preference would be, if I may say , you keep the same concepts as the first one and take some other places based on the concepts. - at a first glance just a chaos or disorder but when scrutinized for a while you can easily sense some kinds of order, it also shows change of an long era from zenith to the abandonment and photographer's warm eye toward these elements.

The first one was so nice and i think in order to explain/add more about the attractiveness, i dared to compare these two from the above viewpoints. Awfully sorry for unexpectedly longer and clumsy comments. Hope i did not say something wrong.

Thanks Stephen and Josh. I understand your comments on this and indeed I also accept it not having a broad interest.

Yoshi; Thanks for taking the time to give your considered views and I find them very interesting. You are right; the two shots bear no relationship other than that they were on the same demolished site. The pipe shot does not invite the imagination to explore below the surface in a similar way as the office. so to speak but I do feel it's history whatever it may be.
The pipes shot, to me is just a 'Map of a weird central heating system with the cylinders and pipe work. I really liked the impossible conglomeration of pipes above the cylinders.
When I go out I try to come back with some different style of shots, especially in a place like docklands where one could spend all the time being mesmerised by the modernity of a lot of the area.
