I'd love some critique on this shot of a huge raw amethyst rock.

A difficult subject indeed.
I would crop the bottom a bit to remove that white chunk that just doesn't seem to fit in.
Not sure about the intrusions at top left and top right but I'll let the techies comment on that.
For what MO is worth I think the general capture is very good

Thank you Pops. A very difficult shot bearing mind this was in a busy shop and kept getting my elbows knocked! I agree about the light piece at the bottom but the top left and right corners show the layering from the outside-in and I included it for that reason. I'm pretty pleased with it considering the conditions at the time.

One point to mention here is to ask the shop owner's permission before you start snapping away. The owner of this lovely rock shop thanked me for asking first. I might get a print done for him.

Good point about asking the shop owner/manager before taking shots.
I do quite a bit of that because my wife is disabled. I can take shots of items she may like for viewing on the computer. Don't do so much of it now because she can use the puter quitewell and shop online.
I only ever had one refusal .... caused quite a stir it did among other customers who had overheard my request. Several walked out with me and I felt quite embarrassed. Needless to say that shop has never been visited again.
