  • First Time- What Do You Think.....

Hi all. I am trying to have a go at night photography time lapse stuff. Most of the time I find the lights too bright, (over exposed?) but the camera I have I can't adjust exposure when in time lapse mode so they always apear way to bright.

Anyhow, here are two that I did at work last week on nights, first one is taken at 90mph and a five second exposure and the second is at 70mph at another five second exposure.

All I have done with them is crop the images and adjusted the light using Picaso2 from google. That is all I have used. Don't have Photoshop or anything like that.

Anyhow, I think they are two of the best pictures I have ever taken and I love them but I am no expert so over to you for your (honest) opinions please! Thanks....

Hi Ekkl - the second one does it for me as the light show turns at the focus of the view. These are nice abstract images.

I can't adjust exposure when in time lapse mode.

Have you considered a neutral density filter which will help with the over exposure problem?

Hi Ron. The camera I use is just a Canon Powershot IXUS 400. It is a pretty small lens that pops out of the front of the camera. It goes everywhere with me!

I prefer your 2nd shot as it seems clearer. You mention 90mph & 70mph, I take it the pics are taken from a vehicle! Are you taking these pics through the windscreen? Would this not affect the clarity of the lights!

            Hi there!

In all honesty, they are not to my taste as they are a little too abstract, as for over exposure, presumably you are shooting in 'manual' mode?

If this is the case, you could try reducing the apperture, that is, using a larger 'f' value, this will reduce the amount of light entering the lense.

            Hope that helps!

            Ben

By the way, have you seen Andrew Thatchers winning salon shot?

This might give you some inspiration.

Also, you may also want to take advantage of the gallery, then upload the UBB code so as the images are embedded into the message to save people having to open a new window. Its really easy to do

I feel I must register my opinion that to drive at 90mph in order to get this shot ain't big and it ain't clever

Totally agree but the pictures were taken from the cab of a train going through two stations..........

Thank you for the replies, the camera is a small compact Canon IXUS and I can't (don't know) how to adjust the f-stops on it. Well, you can do but not in time mode.......

Thanks again for the replies. I like this kind of 'motion shot'. As you say, eye catching and fun to experiment with, I would love to master night photograpy I do have two other cameras, an EOS10 and an EOS500 both film cameras.

I have taken the advice given earlier and added a gallery with some more stuff, all I have done is cropped the pictures and raised or lowered the colour temp. Check out my gallery, don't know how to link to it but it is under my username.

                      Thanks.

mmmmm, have you ever stuck your head out of the window of a vehicle doing 70mph?
I think that might be one bit that he could not have avoided.
