  • Steam Train

On a recent trip to Cuba we visited a sugar plantation on this old steam train.

I would be interested in your views on this picture. I just turned around and saw the steam, but I had to shoot towards the sun. The clouds, steam, smoke and the engine silhouette attracted me.

Please let me know what you think of this image. I did try it as a portrait orientation but it cut our too much steam imo.

    Pity about the cheap glass.

I too think this is quite stunning and and slightly ethereal. The only downside I would say is that the chimney is too dominant and therefore detracts the eye from the train (but it's probably too difficult to edit out eh?) Great shot Audrey.

        Re: Steam Train

Audrey i can see why a silhouette would attract , but i don't think this one is clear cut anoth , most of the train is hidden and the chimney and roof dominate the scene .
Unless noise is a problem i would try to draw some detail out of the shadows .
I hate giving critique at the best of times and seldom do , but sometimes i have to say what i feel .
This is a good scene which in my opinion would benifit from a touch more detail showing .

I can see what attracted you Audrey, and tbh I quite like the chimney in this shot, it even contrasts well with the chimney of the train and gives the picture some height, also its not too central which was what jarred with me in another recent shot posted here

I suspect though that what your eye saw was not quite captured by the camera, and what disappoints me is that I can't see enough of the steam or the engine. For me there is a big block of darkness I want to see in to Anyway I ran it through PS and came up with what for me is a more pleasing image.

Now that more detail can be seen it's a great shot!

              Put it down to jetlag.

Thanks Stephen, this is more like what I got out of it last night and then when I posted it I noticed it was all dark but it was too late (or early!) for me to start all over again. Although I saved it as "adjusted" it is not what I had adjusted it to. I messed it up somewhere along the line.

Anyway I will have another go.

Thanks to everyone for their comments.

                Hi Audrey

Looks like a similar train we were on in Cuba, did you have a 3 man band on board, singing a song that sounded like the Burger king "Their only one ninety niner etc.."? With the locals waving as you went by? Ours was on route to a cigar factory, from Guardalavaca.

Sorry to jump in on the thread like that.

Some Cuba shots here Audrey if you fancy a peek

There was a band on board but I don't think it was the same train. I felt we did not go far enough for our money. Everyone had their hands out for your money.

I had a quick glance at your pics, thanks and will have another look later - not been all through my own yet.

Here is another shot which includes the water tank (I think - someone will put me right)

I think I like the first one best because the smoke is going across the chimney. What do you think?

Also is the processing any better? Should I give the people a bit of guassian blur? What else does it need?

Hey, Aydrey, I see you are back from your vacation.
The steam train is nice. I like the first train photo with the lighting of the second
I checked your photos at Photobucket and it seems you have had a great time
