I put up a lion and some suggested that I play with contrasts to make him stand out, being new to this had a go today and think maybe gone too far
also had a go at turning him into black and white
please advise.
Fluffy Penguin,
In your color version you need to desaturate the image, then adjust the color balance and then the contrast.
In the black and white version you need to darken the image and then adjust the contrast.
Here are some samples in approximation of what I'm suggesting.

I think you have too.....
I honestly think George has pretty much said it all, nice photograph by the way, a shame so much man made material around him though
I've never managed to get a decent shot in that enclosure - yours is not a bad picture though. Prefer it in colour myself and I think George is right about turning the saturation down a bit.
Here's one I took earlier this year (probably the same beast). I tried to blur the background but not very successfully ! I may go back and have another go one day but making a selection around all that hair . Perhaps I'll have more luck next time I go there and get a shot with a less distracting background.
It was Colchester Zoo,
I have to say some of the enclosures and the lions was one of them was quite uninspiring, I know they were trying to make changes but this enclosure ws a tad boring making it difficult to photo.
