Have just bspent a few days in Akaroa, situated on Banks Peninsular just out from Christchurch New Zealand. I have taken lots of photos - trying to choose the best time of the day. Found this tree on a cleared hill above the village. Obviously distorted by constant winds. The question about this scene is - would you class this as a landscape or because the tree dominates - is it a photo of a tree only ??
Most certainly I would call it a 'tree-scape' Trev.
The tree is the main character, dominating the shot.
It is formed at the front, based in the centre and in main focus.
The angle of perception takes the eye into the foliage.
Had the 'bulk' of the tree or the trunk been off the photo then I would have deemed it a Landscape.

Ha ha I'm not at all sure there is such a thing as a tree-scape hyphen or not but I get your drift For me though, I'd most certainly put it in the genre of a Landscape. The dominance of the tree does not alter that.

Heck thats a new one on me whats it mean??
I like the picture though Trev, the scene needs a dominant feature and this certainly fits the bill. I suppose you would never have taken the photo had it not been there though
Hi Ddigit,
A great photograph, and definately a landscape, with the tree offering a terrific foreground interest, the tree makes the image, but it is still a landscape, the surrounding landscape is still in focus and detailed so the image is not a tree study, if the landscape was out of focus/blurred it would then be a photograph of a tree. IMHO
It's a landscape, but to be honest I couldn't care less; the shot stands up on it's own regardless of how you categorise it. Beautiful
At the risk of sounding predictable, have you made a mono version yet? The tones and textures would certainly lend themselves to a nice one, so perhaps you'd consider it?
Thank all for your valuable remarks. I always try out suggestions and feel as though I am learning as a result of the forums. Yes I have tried a mono version and have decided to keep this landscape for a B&W competition coming up. Even though this shot took advantage of the evening light the colour is not really necessary.
