  • Natural Beauty

This is one of my latest images, Natural Beauty. It was taken at Wollaton Park in Nottingham. It feautures a stag who in my opinion was brave, as he let me get quite close.

    Hi,

Great that you managed to get so close. However The picture is a little soft (the antlers especially). Were you using a fast shutter speed?

Also I am not sure about the composition. Finally the contrast is a little low and the picture looks "flat".

I hope you don't mind but I have a play with colour and contrast.

    Best Regards

    Josh

Hello Matt, I have photographed those many times. I suspect that you were trying to make his mouth and tongue the focal point but like Josh says the whole thing seems to have come out a bit bland.
The park deer are quite used to people wondering around and if you approach them a few inches at a time over a period of 15 minutes or so you can get really close. I haven't been there since they started the hall restoration work.

I appreciate your comments. I don't photograph wild animals often, and all this advice will certainly come in handy in the future.

@Josh: Yeah I was using abnormally high shutter speeds that day, taking advantage of the sunlight. However, the main reason for the blandness is due to the digital zoom used. Unfortunately I had to step just into the digital range to get the shot I wanted, and digital zoom removes a lot of colour and detail.

Hi Matt, a nice composition, and I actually like the angle with the sloping horizon.

I wont comment about what has already been said, but what I will say is to NEVER use digital zoom, in fact, turn it off completely so you never stray into it.

Its always better to crop it after.

          Keep snapping Matt!

Thankyou Yes, I rarely enter the digital zoom range but in this case I felt i'd give it a try. I'll turn it off in future.
