This is one of my latest photos, Elegance. It was taken last sunday at Wollaton Park in Nottingham, and for some reason this tree just stood out for me.

    Re: Elegance

    Hi,

I can see what you were trying to get at here but to be honest I think you needed to include the entire tree. Then the spread of branches may have demonstrated the "elegance" you have tried to capture but the crop doesn't allow us to see that.

Also the light seems a little harsh with a degree of flare on the trunk. Earlier or later in the day with the tree as more of a silouhette may work better.

    Best Regards

I appreciate what you're saying Josh. I'm not quite sure why I didn't include the whole tree though!

        Re: Elegance

Matt I'm a big fan of tilting the camera in order to achieve what can be a more dynamic result. I personally do it all the time. I was on a shoot last Sunday and took well over 200 shots, maybe half had the camera tilted.

However they were not landscape shots, or scenes where tilting the horizontal makes for a rather awkward effect. In this scene I cannot really see what is to be gained by tilting the camera, the tree is not falling over, and the land does not tilt as you have shown, therefore it jars the brain which sees it as wrong. This is not to say its a rule that must not be broken, but in this instance I feel it doesn't work.

          Firstly thanks for replying
Although I see where your coming from, I feel that sometimes the tilting can add to the effect of the image. I felt at the time that this was the case, but I suppose that opinion differs from person to person.

            Re: Elegance

            Hi Matt,

I would echo what Josh and Stephen have said, this looks like a really interesting tree, and it would work well in a landscape shot, or even with the sun setting behind it.

I really dont think the tilting works here though, landscapes should be (almost) always perfectly straight.

Another little tip with trees, is to stand a lot closer, and shoot upwards, it can add a little to the granduer of trees like this.
