The image you see is the image that I envisaged, I could lighten the shadow area, but what you see is the original lighting enhanced by the black background blending etc: I tried a lighter shadow version but it looked mundane, and as you say it lost some of the mood and atmosphere. this image is the effect I was after.

Based on comments and sugestions, and in the interest of learning, and
Against my better judgement, I have adjusted the image shadows very slightly, to see what effect it would have, I tried various levels of adjustment but felt that only a slight adjustment is possible so as to maintain the original effect and mood of the image.
What do you think?
