Had to see if I could get a better result with my Canon...I did.

P.s. just noticed the coloured bits at the top...oopps.

Forgive me Keith - I know that you aspire to the best quality possible but I just don't think this one is right (apart from the cyan fringing at the top). This is an ISO 100 shot and yet it looks very grainy, even in the continuous tone areas. I really do wonder if it is over-sharpened?

The coloured bits are simple to remove - desaturate! There's little colour in the moon anyway, so killing the colour loses nothing. I'm viewing on the iPad at the moment, so can't see the granularity....is it simply compression artefacts?
One problem with shooting the moon is atmospheric disturbance. You can combat this by shooting a number of exposures and then stacking them together. I use a free program called registax (v5). It is daunting to begin with, but really lifts 'beyond the earth' photos.

What kit did you use Keith?

          Re: Lunar Shot

Ian you are probably right about the sharpening...I did do a sharpen at the end to try and give it a "lift".
At the time there was thin wisps of cloud so maybe it could not be that sharp.

The kit was Canon 7D and 400 5.6. mirror lock up and timer.

I have tried many times with the Olympus - both E510 and 520 and Sigma 135- 400 and 50 -500 and not quite managed anything - but on this I did my usual and mess it all up....lol

You inspired me to get outside tonight . I have never been satisfied with my moon shots, but I'm quite pleased with this effort:

            Olympus OM-D E-M5, Zuiko Digital 300mm f/2.8 + EC-14 1.4x converter (equivalent to 840mm full frame lens), ISO 200, 1/500th @f/5.0, processed from RAW in Lightroom 4.

I also haven't achieved a good moon shot with my E-400. Looking at the people who do manage good shots, like Ian's last, long lenses, teleconverters and absolute stability seem to be the key.

Mine seem to be like yours, even with clear skies.

I put a 5" telescope on my E-400, but the mirror slap always knocked it out.

              David.

                Re: Lunar Shot

I switched IS off for mine and used a 2 second delay to let the camera settle. I also used 1/500th to counter any other unwanted movement -including the moon itself as it does move quite fast

On an E-System DSLR I would recommend anti-shock (flips the mirror and only releases the shutter after a delay) but I can't remember if the E-400 has this.

I do not have I.S. with this lens........and Ian you continue to make me think I should have gone with the OM-D E-M5.
The detail in yours is amazing.

Sadly not; a terrible omission that would have been nice in a firmware upgrade. Did I say firmware upgrade?

                      Re: Lunar Shot

I have found in the few lunar shots I have attempted better results are obtained with my setup before the sky is dark, in other words while the sky is still blue. This considerably aids accurate exposure and minimises any PP needed because of the reduced contrast. I am just a lunar (loony)beginner but it looks like this is the way forward for me.
