  • Red Kite

My part of Lincolnshire is not blessed with the same number of Red Kites as some other counties. Not to be deterred I went out early to a local "Hotspot" to see what I could get. Had to wait a while and then only one arrived (a local said there had been plenty the day before). Took some time before it came close enough and at the right angle for me to bang off a few, this is about the best:

Quite a big crop and some pp to bring out details in the feathers as it was a fairly misty morn. Have I overdone it?

      Re: Red Kite

David, I think this is a great capture of the Kite showing fantastic detail, but something doesn't feel quite 'right' about the photo. I've sat looking at it for quite a while during my lunch break and if I was at home I might be tempted to mess around in photoshop.
I think it is the sky that is the problem, how about ramping up the blue saturation and reducing the blue luminence? If the bird was lit as well as it looks now I would expect to see a darker sky.
I may be wrong but it could be worth a try?

        Re: Red Kite

Thanks Iain, I'll have a go when I have time. I had already increased the vibrance overall and ramped up saturation a bit in the oranges and yellows as the original was pretty flat. I had a problem with the misty weather this morning which was just beginning to clear when the Kite arrived.

Great shot, I like it - I also like the others in your gallery.

Thanks all for your comments. Off to foreign climes this week but by the time I get back there may be more Kites at the hot-spot.
