  • Hit or miss?

Snapped this earlier and at first look I didn't like it thinking it was a really mediocre shot but I keep coming back to it. The ethereal greens in the background offset against the red are really starting to grow on me.

What do you guys think? I am seeing something that isn't there?

    Grateful for your honesty.

I do share your thoughts on the swirling mist of the cool green background, but the foreground bloom doesn't do the rest of the frame justice for me.

Would a crop work to reframe it or shall I bin it and move on?

You could try extracting a different flower and overlaying it?

The bloom needs to be more focused and with better lighting. A non fading bloom would also be better. This carnation is definately past its best.

Thanks, Pops. On reflection, I have decided it is definitely a miss. It is the background which I find compelling rather than the flower. Thanks for your comments. An unplanned shot but one for the bin although I am going to experiment more with the greenery.

For me the background is competing with the carnation, easily dealt with simply brighten the flower a little and vignet the whole image to make the corners darker. This would of course dub down the background you rather like.
I think pictures are about the subject and backgrounds should be secondary and unobtrusive but able to compliment the main subject quietly.

Shame the flower wasn't at its best.
