  • Everyone needs a rainbow

    Hi,
This photo was taken at a place called Punakiki on the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand. If you are there at the right time and weather conditions, blowholes water and spray produce quite spectacular rainbows. What do you all think.

Trevor - another very fine picture! Now, the question is - are you a very good photographer, or is it just that you have some very nice scenery to photograph down there in New Zealand

Its a bit of a belter isnt it!

Lovely shot Trevor. I particularly like the composition with the inclusion of the surrounding rocks framing the water.

Out of interest, did you try any longer exposures? I am wondering whether it would have accentuated the spectrum more?

A super image well photographed and composed, Love the viewpoint, detail in the rocks is really great, it draws your eye into and around the image, then back to the rainbow/blow hole. superb.

          Hi Tinka,
yeah, another nice landscape picture. Did you know even before taking the picture that you could expect a rainbow there with high probability? or you were just lucky? I was also thinking why you cropped the pic, maybe the both ends? Probably you want to draw more attention to the rainbow, the main subject?
I understand quite well why Ian feels envious. A very photogenic place, indeed. you need of course both good photography skills and understanding of the nature if you want to take good pictures. Looking forward to the next.

Hi Tinka, thanks for the reminding. I was surely confused. I remember I read your comments and immediately wrote mine.

and again, to ddigit, nice pic indeed.

                Hi Trevor

Lovely photo. The detail in the rocks is great and the rainbow is spot on. You say this happens all the time so I guess you know your way around the area well. Hoping to see some more of the same soon.

                  Re: Everyone needs a rainbow

I like this Trev, and I'm jealous I don't live in an area with such landscape features. It seems to me that not only do you need all the elements to come together but also your timeing has to be spot on too. Is this shot taken when the water is at its highest in the blowhole, or does it go higher, I imagine there are some speatacular shots to be had if it does. In this instance you have a boiling mass of seawater as its forced up the blowhole, you definately don't want to fall in there, or indeed get too close with the camera

Is this the full frame shot? I ask because I'm left feeling the blowhole is a tad too tightly framed and would like to have seen it more in context with the surrounding landscape, more rocks, or coastline or sea especially to the right.

There is obviously sun too to create the rainbow, yet it looks pretty murky away to the south, and the rocks are not as brightly lit as I would have expected, was this afternoon sun just breaking through the cloud. Wish you'd left the Exif data with the pic.

                    Re: Everyone needs a rainbow

                    Hi All,

Thank you for all your encouraging comments.
Stephen -The photo was nearly full frame with just a tad cropping to the right hand side to bring the rainbow to the intersection of the "thirds". I deliberately darkened the sky a bit to focus the attention on the blowhole although there was a fair bit of horizon cloud. As you can imagine I took heaps of photos. Actually my wife got a bit carried away with the rainbows and she got some fantastic shots - (probably better than mine).

Ian - how cruel - seriously though - the South Island of New Zealand has a large mountain range to the west and plains/ hills to the east. Prevailing weather comes from the west so this coast is rugged and has some spectacular scenery. We lived in the North Island most of our lives and when visiting South decided that this was the place.

Yoshi & CoupeKid - This area is called Dolomite point and has been sculptured by Nature and now has been assisted by man - it is a tourist attraction and the area is paved and fenced for safety reasons. A German tourist got too close a couple of years ago and perished. It is well known that high tide produces the blowhole shots and if the sun is OK, then comes the rainbow. The sea water does blow higher and then the spray drifs down on top of you (and your camera gear). I did bracket my exposures and this was the best exposed for the rainbow. The problem was that the rock has a orange cast and this shows through the transparancy.

                    Regards
                    Trev

                            Trevor,

Made it to the South Island with a tour group about 3 years ago. Spectacular scenery (and WOW does your photo capture it), great people, and my first bungee jump at the river gorge. We fell in love with New Zealand, and hope to get back there again.

Spectacular scenery and colouring.... My sister just returned from a month in NZ - she fell in love with it... and is working through hundreds (thousands?) of images.
