  • Xanthogramma pedisequum

This year has been poor in the UK for insects due to the low temperatures and almost constant rain. It was a great pleasure to see this handsome hoverfly yesterday.

Nicely captured. Your right, the insects are very scarce up to now.

Those are absolutely beautiful pictures, a suberb series! You even managed to make it look like it might be a beautiful summer's day.

We've been noticing different behaviour patterns of the birds. We even had a Greater Spotted Woodpecker helping itself to something from teh ground feeders this morning. They usually appear in the Oak tree or maybe on a fat-ball feeder (with impregnated insects) but never at a ground feeder in the middle of the lawn!

Very nice pictures Peter, thanks for posting them.

They don't freak me out when I see them close up like that, it's when they are flying around like nutters that sees me running away from anything like that!

I remember as a child being frightened when I saw bees and wasps. These guys are such good mimics that I reckon I ran away from more of these than the real things.
                Kind regards

These won't hurt you one little bit ekkl. If you stand perfectly still with a finger outstretched they will come and land on our finger and you can have a real good look at them.
