Balls

This was taken at our Elizabeth's 13th birthday party at the local bowling alley. Time moves on (she's 16 today ) and the bowling alley is now no more.

Olympus Pen E-P1, 14-42mm kit zoom, ISO 1600, 14mm (28mm equivalent), f/7.1, 1/10th second.

Quite a lot of post processing was done -below is the original un-edited image:

Ian, I agree the processing is wonderful!! Really makes the picture stand out and gives it a sense of fluidity/motion. That's where my skills are not great at all. I have a top notch program; however, I am kind of "old school" in the sense that if I can't take a picture using the correct settings and acheive the best picture possible with uploading it and manipulating it with a program then I don't feel as though it's genuine and true photography. That line of thinking comes from the fact that my older sister was a professional photographer for over twenty years and all she shot on was a Hasselblad 503C and she developed all her own pics and everything. So she and I both are trying to adapt to the digital world. But great picture, I love the content and placement!

I fully understand this point of view. I interviewed a Getty photograoher once and he would adjust the camera settings and lighting until everything was perfect when he viewed the image from the camera JPEG file and then he sent the RAW files to the picture editor and demanded that the RAWs should be processed to look exactly like the JPEGs

But the reality is that the digital medium gives us all a huge flexibility for improving our images. This is balanced, however, by the fact that if you do get the original image as right as possible then your post-processing won't need to be too severe and this normally means a better result.

I agree wholeheartedly with that! Take the best picci you can with the camera then make the best picci you can in your (digital) darkroom.

Deeds, which imaging software are you using? We have a forum HERE where there are discussions about imaging sofware and post processing.

I think im going to have to learn about touching up photographs.

I havnt got photo shop so could you recommend a good free program please Ian or anyone else?

I'm hoping Ian might be able to make some suggestions here, Kev, but in the meantime Google for 'The Gimp' and also have a look at 'Picasa'.

'The Gimp' is free and I think you'll find tutorials on using it. I'm not so sure about Picasa being free but I don't think it'll cost much if there is a charge for the download.

Yes, the Picasa is free and I think it's the better choice for a beginner. You also get some free online storage for your photos.

The bowling alley shots were taken during on of my daughters' birthday party a couple of years ago. I didn't do any close up shots of the pins actually. And the bowling alley has since closed down I hear that the entire entertainment centre, which is only about 15 years old, including a skating rink, pool, and multi-screen cinema, among other things, will have to be pulled down because of subsidence. It was built on top of an old land-fill site...
