  • Nevada desert and moon

I originally shot this (in 2007) in portrait format but I felt that a square frame might be better. I also processed a short sequence of three bracketed frames in Photoshop CS6 Merge to HDR Pro, not for an over HDR effect but to enrich the colours and tones.

The location is in the rocky hills in the Nevada desert that overlook Las Vegas and was taken on an excursion out of the city during the PMA show that year.

I like this very much. The light is great, with the last rays catching some of the rocky outcrops. The shadows are nicely balanced, showing just the right amount of detail and the moon is the icing on the cake. There may be slight artifacts in the outline of the ridge but you have to look hard for them and I'm sure it would make a great print to frame and hang on your wall.

Thanks John - this was sunrise by the way; I had to get up at about 5AM - and this was quite some time after sunrise, but we were there when it was still pitch dark

I did wonder if it might have been sunrise, but discounted that when I read it was an excursion during PMA! That trip into the desert must have been a great experience.

I like the shot very much. The detail in the moon surface is remarkable. I like the contrast, the colours and the sharpness. Camera and lens?? Horacio.

Hi Horacio - this was taken with an Olympus E-330 back in 2007. I used a ZD 50-200 (Mark 1) at 200mm.
