  • Panasonic TZ20

It's a long time since I posted any images here for critique but I know where to come when I want an honest opinion. Recently I purchased a Panasonic TZ20 and I would like your opinion on some of the images I have produced with it. I'll start with this image of my local church which is situated in the village of Stanton in Suffolk. I processed this in Picasa.

I'm being very honest here, Ron, so I hope you won't mind.

It's a lovely old church in a lovely setting but I'm not too sure the picci does it justice.

I'm not too keen on the dark area at the bottom, which takes up almost half the frame. The rather prominent vignette also takes away even more of the brightness, light and colour at the top and on the sides too.

TBH I'm not sure about the movement blur on the sides either. was that a zoom blur or was it done in post processing?

Overall the vignette and motion blur do work, to some extent, to highlight the church but I fin those elements a tad distracting from rather than enhancing the church.

Does anyone else have any comment?

I must agree with Pol. Much too much black area at the bottom of the picture. If it was cropped to remove much of the black and some from the left, putting the large window on the thirds I think that it would look much better. Not too worried about the blur, just a bit too much of it.

Thank you Pol and Kurt for your very honest and informative critique. It's now very obvious I let myself get carried away with the new editing features in Picasa's latest version. I have re-cropped the image and totally agree that has made a vast improvement.
The Zoom blur Pol is software applied. Again one of the new gizmos in Picasa.

Thank you both again for taking the time to critique my image.

I would be interested to see the cropped version Ron.

Sorry the image is small, but this will give you and idea of how it has improved the image. Will do a complete re-edit at a later date and post again.

            Thanks for your interest Kurt.

Looks better Ron, I don't know if you can lighten the shadows in Picasa, but I would try that of possible. - Perhaps you will have to go back to the Church for another go. Good luck with your photography, you have a nice little camera there.

The crop is a huge improvememnt and begins to allow the church to be the full focus of attention. Still could do with some shadows lifting in the foreground.

I completely agree that the expanse of darkness at the base of the frame didn't work, but I did like the radial effect. In the new version the dark area issue has largely been corrected but the trees that made the radial effect work have also been cropped out and there is just small amount of the effect remaining and this no longer works. So I would suggest a wider aspect ratio view to bring those trees back into play.

Thank you all for the help and advice, much appreciated. I feel I should abandon this particular image and start afresh. Hopefully the sky will have a few clouds in it next time I capture this scene using the tips you have all put forward. I'll post the retake as and when.

I was a bit depressed when I looked at the forecast for this week as it matched the cloud cover I could see out the window this morning. Then at lunch time the clouds were gone and the news weather update indicates we'll have sunny intervals for much of the week to come. On the other hand we're still in the midst of a winter drought
