  • Backlighting

Compared with you folks I'm a real neophyte at this pursuit but I have a desire to improve my photography. I'm constantly seeing photos from others and thinking, "Wish I had taken that". With that thought in mind I've been seeking out non-traditional settings. Contained below is a non-staged serendipitous shot. I was trying to capture the door backlit by the setting sun when this couple approached. Her face was framed nicely by the window pane. The shot is unedited. I was going to crop off the bit of light at the lower right but decided to just run with it as is.

Most upon seeing it consider it pretty ordinary but it's one I keep coming back to. Please share your thoughts. It you think it needs to be relegated to the cutting room floor I won't be offended!

If you're not living on the edge you're taking up too much room.

The important thing is that you like it.
Shame you didn't have a lower viewpoint though.

Well I really like this picci very much. It has a nice 'sociable' feel to it, a feeling that my friends have just arrived to join me at the table. A certain prescence that exudes a feel good factor.

Bin it? No way! I'd want to have a nice print it if it were mine.

I just played with it in CS5 and didn't feel it needed much doing to it. All I did was to straighten the vertical of the door edge down the centre. That automatically just cropped off that white light bottom right and also took a small amount off the top (removing the door mechanism to concentrate more closely on the lady's face).

Attached is the result of my quick tweak

Much better! Thank you for doing that and for the comments.

I'm using old Photohop Elements 4.0 and need to upgrade. I just bought Dreamweaver CS5. I wonder if that entitles me to a break on the purchase price of the new Elements and Premier?

None that I know of, certainly nothing that I know of here in the uk - unless Ian knows of any offers?

Speaking purely from my own experience, Adobe doesn't seem to be renowned for software generosity.

The only offers I know of are if you are a full time student or have kids at school. You can get some big discounts with Microsoft software this way and Adobe discounts can be worthwhile. I don't know if Elements is included though.
