    Re: Harvest Time

Great eye to see and make a great shot. I particularly like the varied colored corn kernels. I played with my hands as if I were cropping it a bit, and found I like it better as a square format, dropping either end. This moves the corn off-center and makes for a more dynamic (?) photo, IMHO. And as I played some more, I then noticed the corn at each end of the frame. I almost wish you had another shot taken just slightly further away, that could use the full cobs on both ends of the final.

But all in all, WOW!. great color, great exposure. Congrats.

    Happy 2007.

      joephoto.

There was a little more than I framed, but also open spaces where you saw more wall. I used my zoom about 2x worth, to sort of pre-crop. I wish I had also taken one about a third of a stop down, just to compare. Also if I had backed off anymore, you would have seen the AC. I don't like to crop unless - it is just a matter of saving an otherwise blooper!

It's different and I like the colours and the tight crop.
Another justification for always having a camera handy

I've always wondered why some types of maize can go multi-coloured like that.

Maybe this thread should go into the Eye of the camera board as it's more of a subject thread than a photo critique one?

I cant give you an explanation of why the kernels have different colors, but we call it Indian corn ??. What the Indians have to do with it, I really don't know. If you think the thread should be moved, have at it. I really didn't know exactly where to place it.

              Re: Harvest Time

It's probably called Indian corn because the (North American) Indians were growing it before the Europeans moved in. Native peoples of Mexico and Central America were growing it at least 5,000 years ago. I found this superficial explanation of the different kernel colours: "Corn kernels have different colors because of genes that control color. Each kernel is an individual with its own set of genes, like an embryo. Kernels are siblings housed on the same ear and so naturally have many different colors. By naturally, I mean, through the course of natural selection. One-color ears are unnatural products of human selection."

                Hi,
I like this image, a great chance find, pity about the unavoidable crop, Thanks for the explanation Res31, like in most things, human selection mostly results in uniform and tasteless products, geard toward profit and commercial production, pity we can't get the original seed over here. but then the EU would probably ban it.

I was just thinking that this picture is about the subject rather than its photographic refinement? But I see that others have suggested some alterations, so that's fine for this board
