  • Late Night Shots

I took these shots at night while traveling in the Med. Any comments are welcome.

    Hi 'V'

Obviously, these are low light shots with a slow shutter speed so there is a lot of motion blur.

Motion blur can be used to good effect as an artistic expression. Sometimes this can be easily appreciated by anyone and at other times it will have a very personal appeal.

Apart from the blur, there are some nice colours in your pictures, but to be brutally honest I don't see anything so far that grabs me and says, that effect is really cool.

Did you conceive a kind of effect beforehand and do you think you have achieved it? Which of the pictures you have posted have achieved the most for you you?

These were just some experimental shots as I had recentley purchased my first digital camera and I was experimenting with exposures etc at night to see what results I got. The one that I like the most is the second shot as there is more contrast in the shot and a sense of movement.

        No problem

Are you looking for some tips on shooting in low light and to avoid motion blur?

It looks as though you may have been on some seagoing vessel because of the movement.

Even if you are on land, it is very difficult to get sharp night time pictures.

I have been on cruises and tried many times to get pictures of the shore at night and whilst some have been reasonable, because of the movement of the ships (which were very large ones and very stable), there is always a slight show of movement. I either use a tripod or balance the camera on the ship's rail. If you are in a very small sailing boat or yacht, unless you have image stabilisation (and I don't know how much this works), I don't think you will improve on what you have.

Someone else will tell you what settings you should use. I think I tried all sorts and probably ended up with using a 'Night Setting' if your camera has one.

Try taking the same pic in daylight. You will have a lot more luck.

            Hi Velocity,

My comments are the same as in the "Experimenting with Light" thread.
Also as a general advice for further experiments: In low light shots or Nightshots the "Incandescent" Mode is not always achieving proper color results.
