  • Experimenting with light

I took this shot using a Canon 350D with a Sigma 70-300mm Lense. I was moving on a ship at the time and was interested on seing what the result would be. Any comments are welcome as I am fairly new to photography as a hobby.

    Hi Velocity,

Your experimental attempt with the light doesn't look so successful to me.
There is no EXIF info in your photos to see what exactly was going on with the camera settings.
From what I see though I assume the following:

With the Canon 350D you can take much better (actually blur free) photos even from a moving ship. The rate of ship movement in relation to the distance of the objects is not enough to cause blurriness.
Also it doesn't matter if the ship was moving, unless you were on a hovecraft:-) What matters is what the theme you are taking a photo of is doing. And from what I see you were taking a photo of of land and buildings that don't have moving abilities.

The first thing I can think of is that you have used very low ISO senitivity and long exposure.
Try to use higher ISO (400 or 800) and faster shutter speeds (let's say for example ISO 800 and 1/20 sec shutter).

If you can provide any further information of the settings used to take the photo maybe we can further advise better.

    Regards

    George

      Hi Velocity,
I like this image in a strange sort of way,
it is different and quite graffic and abstract, I think it was a lucky accident, and produced an abstract arty effect. As for taking photographs aboard ship I have never tried it, but would assume a fast shutter speed and medium to high ISO would suffice as a starting point, or try useing the sport setting on a camera if it has one.
