I attended a Fly In and Car Show in Simsbury, Connecticut on Sunday and of course took a camera. Here are a couple of shots I took and I'd like some constructive criticism. The first one is of the hood ornament of a vintage Pierce Arrow. The second is of the take off of an aerobatic biplane. In the latter case I panned while shooting at 1/30. I also captured that shot in RAW but haven't tried any post processing with it.

On the first image I want to see the hand gripping the bow as sharp as the rest of him. Also I think the view point should be changed so that the figure is shooting his arrow into the image rather than out.
In the second image the plane is not quite sharp enough, although you have captured the feeling of speed and movement very well. 1/30th shutter speed is too slow, recently I was shooting go-karts at a shutter speed of 1/160th and still getting a nice motion blurred background.
Thanks Rich. Both critiques are helpful. In the aircraft shot, I had two objectives and accomplished neither. I had hoped to obtain what you suggested - (1) a sharp object with a blurred background and (2) a shot where the plane was intentionally blurred. It's difficult to explain the latter objective. As means of illustration I'm going to show you a shot that I didn't take. Rather it's a shot of me in a ski race. The photographer used intentional blurring to create a rather dramatic effect. I'm guessing he used a very slow shutter speed. When I tried that with other planes flying by the results were disappointing. How should I go about taking such a shot?

My feeling is that it would be very hard to achieve with a subject like an airplane. It doesn't bend and move like a human body. Other than the propeller, it's a solid object. However you blur it, I think it'll look unnatural!?!? If it was me I'd go for getting the airplane as sharp as possible.
I've never taken a shot like the skier, so guessing a bit, I think 1/30th second would be about right for the skier.
