  • Gigging again....

My favourite (so far) from last week's gig, which was well worth the long trip through the countryside to find the tiny pub.

This is a web version, so the exif will have gone - taken in a virtually dark pub with a 50mm lens on the 550D, at 100 ISO, f2, flashgun attached with mini softbox, -2 flash exposure compensation and the lowest flash power I could select as I was only about 4 feet from him. Critique welcomed, as I've got several more gigs coming up and any help would be gratefully received!

A nice shot that grabbed the very moment he was abosorbed in his plyaing the music.
The disarray of the hair shows he was shaking his head radically.

Is it possible to show the light more visible by pp? The one from the upper right corner to his beard.

I wanted a little bit more DOF so that it covers the tatoo on his shoulder clearly. I somehow feel that by doing that it shows more efficiently that he is an artist.
As the musical instrument is not shown in this frame, I think, it might help the viewer like me to appreciate more of this pic.

(You said it was dark and at f2 of 50mm lens at 1.2m, maybe I am saying what is impossible in view of the circumstances? Did you also take similar shots with different ISO?)

Or the DOF might be already enough if I could see a larger print. So this could be simply due to the photo size, of course.

Otherwise the title should show / explain more of the nature of this pic.
Not a good one but something like "A Musician - The Ecstacy Master" --- sorry my limited vocaburaly does not allow me to think a better one, though I tried to think about it for a few minutes.

    Just my preference, of course.

      Re: Gigging again....

Thanks for your comments Yoshi - given me plenty to think about and a lot of ideas to try out tomorrow night when the band are playing again, this time at a much bigger venue (anyone from Birmingham fancy coming down to the Roadhouse? bring your plugs...)

I did try to bring out the blue light more with curves, but I think having to use flash has killed that avenue. I very rarely use flash at gigs as I don't like the effect, but the place where they were playing last week was so small that I couldn't get the opportunity to get back from them. I also tried other lenses, but they just weren't fast enough to cope with the lighting conditions. I'm saving hard for a 24-70mm lens, as the 50mm is only useful at a certain distance from the stage.

I didn't really like many of the ones I took this night, but here's another of Glyn just to show you that he did have an instrument. Being in a bar, I was also trying to cut out the television behind the drummer, the fan on the wall behind the lead guitarist, and the door to the kitchen behind the bassist!

Hopefully you'll be able to see his tattoo more clearly this time. I didn't post this one because it's just so dark, but I have put up some other in the story thread
