Re: Famous Rock Guitarist
nme? no. not in my opinion. simply due to the very distracting background, which may have been made worse by converting to b&w. for this to work in mono, there needs to be much better separation / isolation of the subject from the background. i don't know what the venue looked like, so no idea if the impact of the background could've been reduced by seeking a better shooting position.
i also don't think that landscape works here. going for portrait layout (even on an angle) would help reduce some of the background clutter. generally, when shooting individual band members, i'll usually go for portrait format, as they -are- portraits.

No, not ****, but don't think it'll make it into the NME for the same reasons as the comment above. It's the background clutter that spoils it for me - and I know, I shoot lots of bands in pubs so end up getting in very close with as wide an angle as I can go. However, that said, I don't have a fast short zoom so usually end up with my 50mm.
One of the bands I shoot for were lucky enough to get a gig at a local working men's club with a proper stage..carolannphotos.smugmug.com / webleedmusicmedia.com

Re: Famous Rock Guitarist
Hi guy's I admit I did not go specifically tooled up to take these types of shots as I was there taking high key portraits of the guests, this was just one I grabbed in a break.
yes 50mm 1.4 and a 70-200, perfect for isolating subject.

Re: Famous Rock Guitarist
as an example of b/w v colour with a fussy background, check this out....

it's rob hawkins from the automatic (what's that coming over the hill, is it a monster?). the b&w version is too cluttered with mic stands, light bars, marshall's etc. the colour version, whilst still having the same clutter, i feel has more impact as the colour of the guitar etc helps lift rob from the background.
