Re: On the 7th day of Christmas................

Lovely shot Stephen, and nicely composed. In my opinion, the slight desat works for the main subject, and the land, however, I feel the sky is lacking something....it also appears like something may have been cloned out as there appears to be a diagonal on the top right?

Thanks Ben, I can promise you however that apart from a slight vignette I applied to the whole image I have done nothing to the sky and not cloned anything out. I would agree however that the sky is lacking something except that feeling of foreboding and impending bad weather

Apply a watercolour or oil painting look then that may work. My personal choice for this image, if it had been mine and I felt it needed some treatment, would have been a mosaic finish. All a matter of personal taste I suppose but nevertheless this is what make photography so interesting.
Indeed it is Ron. However what you are proposing is applying a stereotypical feel to an image, ie making an old style windmill look old with perhaps a sepia and faded edge vignette (I realise you never actually said that treatment) Its frankly rather a predictable and cliched effect IMO.

What you have with your version is applied an effect to make it look like a piece of art, the mosaic effect. You are making it into something that it is not, ie a mosaic. The same principle applies to the effects that can be gained with other filters, ie Dry Brush. They make the image appear like a painting, which it is not. Here's an example.

I'm afraid this is not my style, though others seem to think its OK. I was once in a an arty shop in Grassington,North Yorks, and they were actually selling photo prints that had been given this sort of effect. There is a program called PhotoArtMaster that does it. I couldn't believe it, needless to say I left without buying

For anyone thats interested to see the original, here it is. This has had nothing done to it except the raw file went through Adobe Camera Raws default settings. I'm not really looking to know whether you feel its better or worse than the the one I originally posted, but you may be able to see why I felt it needed a slightly different treatment. The sky was lacking much detail though it did add some contrast to the turbines

The mood is better in the worked shot, This is just a pretty picture. The fans give it a bit of interest but not much.

What do you think, does the desat and grain work. I'll maybe post the original later if you all hate this one. But I rather like it, won't be upset if you don't though

Hi Stephen, I have had a long look at this picture and I like it a lot. I like the composition, although I wish there were an extra turbine at either end and I can see that cropping it would not work.

I like the desat and grainy look, which surprises me as I normally prefer colour, but on this occasion I feel that this treatment is better than the colour.

Funny thing is, I thought that this was a thread, starting "On the first day of Christmas," and everyone putting in a picture for each day of Christmas.

Of course it would really be too late to start it would it?

I would agree, I honestly feel that a lot of these types of filter cheapen an image.

I am late to look as usual. I liked the effect in this shot. Really think the desat look in particular suits the purity of the wind turbines. Dont mond the sky etc. Love the fence lead in. Composition wise - It is possible to crop strongly so the turbines are the dominant feature. In your photo I feel they are a bit isolated in the middle of the picture. Maybe a bit more landscape and offset turbines would be OK.

                        Regards
                        Trevor

Thanks Trevor, you could be right, I'll try and remember to think about doing that another time. Appreciate your input on that one, its why I post stuff here.

Eyup Stephen, how are you? The sky is rather bland so I actually like the grain. I did think I new where this was, but on further investigation I dont, I took a very similar shot way back in the old days, I bet you cant remember it, it actually got put in a mag ;-) which I was very proud.
                            cheers
                            Ash.

I'm doing OK thanks Ash. I do have a vague recollection of yours, you should start a gallery and get some on.

I've found the windfarm on Google Not too far out of Penistone
