I've not posted for some time I know , so I thought I'd better make amends by posting this one that I took today. I don't often get the chance to take photos in such lovely (if cold) conditions:

Hi Thea, a beautiful bird. Is this a crop, if not I'm really impressed you managed to fill the frame without losing any of the extremities.

Thanks Stephen - he is a lovely bird, and you don't get to see him fly so well very often (he prefers to run!).

It is a cropped image, but not by a great deal. I was 'playing around' using the camera on Aperture Priority Auto today to see what results I could get, given the lighting conditions (bright but contrasty).

It's almost as if he or she is deliberately posing for you

I haven't gone far Ian, I promise !

This was taken at the Hawk Conservancy Trust in Hampshire.

Absolutely cracking shot - either version! I like the play of light on the feathers.

An excellent shot, but to be picky the window frame behind the bird slopes to the left. Try levelling it up before cropping then it will be less distracting. Just a thought.

This just had to be a POTD and so it is today:

It's also worth mentioning that Thea posted her shot in Adobe RGB space, so non colour-managed browsers like Internet Explorer will not show this image at its best.

The version shown in the POTD has been converted to sRGB, so it should look better.

Thanks - I hadn't noticed that ! However, when I straightened it up I ended up with a crop similar to my original (cropped) image.
