Very striking.. good capture of the light, and I like the way the eye is led by that sunbeam

          Re: Sunbeam

I recently entered this in a local camera club competition. I expected it to do well but the judge was a bit obssesed with HDR and went on about how I could have avoided the blown out bits had I used HDR methods (Well duh!).

He then knocked the composition saying there was too much going on in the image to call it "sunbeam". A bit harsh I thought, it stands out to me, so much so that I want Scotty to beam me up!

He scored it 16/20 which put my nose out of joint a bit considering the lowest score he gave any image was 15/20.

So thanks to all for the feedback. I read the warnings about the critique being frank, so this means a lot to me.

          Cheers

          Rich

            Hi Rich

I like your image. I know what you mean about Judges as I also belong to a Photographic Society.

However, I just scrolled down your image (cutting off the top) and it is amazing how much focus there is on the grass when it is displayed as a letter box orientation.

Of course you lose the tops of the trees!

Audry makes a very good point, crop the top third of and it takes away any distraction the burnt out areas have, and concentrates on the important shaft of light. It then makes an extremely good image

I agree but I think that it is a lovely image anyway. I dont know about your particular competition but some that I have entered specify they format ratio, making many changes disqualifying.

                  Hi Jeff
Are you sure its the format of the image, that would be very restricting, I have never in all my years associated with the photographic club world come across this. Its normally the size of the mount the image is presented on, usually restricting to a maximum of size 20' x16" or 50cm X 40cm for practical reasons. The image contained being whatever shape or size the author wants within that mount.

This picture certainly has enough going for it to be included as a Picture of the Day (POTD) but we only select images from the DPNow gallery. I think that could be considered a broad hint dropped

Certainly is Ian, perhaps picture of the day should be selected from all posted images not just the gallery.

Well surely you have as much right as anyone else to nominate a POTD so I'd say go ahead and just do it!

Not necessarily for a "camera club" competition, but photography contests that outside of clubs will often require that all entries be of an 8x10. These could include, but not be restricted to venues like a county fair. The reasoning for this would be to incourage participation from a larger group. Many of the contestants would be your "average Joe (or Joanne)" who would be using a P&S and printing thier photo at Walmart. Kind of levels the playing field.
In no way would I place you or your photo in this group, but there can be some amazing photographs in competitions such as these broader venues.

                          Jeff

P.S. If your photo is put into your gallery I would be pleased to nominate.
