  • Outer Banks Lighthouse

    Hi,

Here's another from my trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I love taking pictures of lighthouses. Taken with an Oly E-500 with 14-45mm lens. Please let me know what you think.

Per comments below I had a go at adding some contrast. I also modified black and white points. Is this better?

    Thanks for the comments.

    Hi Jim,

The scene is nice and looks interesting. However, the picture lacks a little sparkle. I can't quite put my finger on it. The shadows indicate it was a sunny day, but it doesn't seem sunny. There is a lack of contrast; it feels a little flat. I tried adjusting it myself, but couldn't really improve it. So I'm at a loss with this one.

    How about you?

      Re: Outer Banks Lighthouse

Hi Jim, I'm a fan of lighthouses too, I got a couple of nice ones on the Maine coast & Cape Cod in '04

Anyway, I like this one, but I know what Ian means. I felt a slight tweak in Levels just gave it a little more punch

I wonder also if it needs a little more space above to give 'room', or perhaps a slightly different perspective on by using a different focal length and camera position. As a matter of interest what was the focal length of the lens in this shot?

        Hi Stephen,

The lens is a 14-45mm zoom. On the E-500 that's an effective 28-90mm. The EXIF data says 37mm, so the effective is 74 mm.

The picture is not cropped so I can't add to the top. I'll have a go at adding some contrast to see what happens.

Thanks for the comments from you and Ian.

Ah now that's interesting, because I had the feeling you were shooting wider than that, but I was obviously wrong. Thanks for getting back so quickly

The whitest part of the lighthouse has, for me, lost detail now -- so I'd suggest that you back off a bit on the contrast. Nice image!

                I would have to agree.
If the shot was taken in RAW and you use ACR in CS2 then you can reveal the highlights by checking the box at the top of the dialogue, then adjust exposure untill they are at their minimum. Of course if you don't do the above then forget what I just said
