  • Studio evening at the club

Tuesday last I went to a studio evening at my number 2 club, Smethwick.

    I made these portraits

Great shots Patrick. Classical poses and sensitively processed. There are some moire style artefacts in the b/g in the first 2 but hopefully they won't spoil a print. I particularly like the colour of the scarf against the red hair in the first two, I think it works well.

      Thank you Stephen.

The moire artifacts had escaped my attention but I see them now, I am hoping they don't print, we shall have to see. They are due to darkening the background quite a bit. As you are aware I like classic style portraits.

I was pleased with these shots, not done any studio work for a long time but found it all flooding back as I worked, helped by very good models that knew their stuff, it makes such a difference.

I think the shot (where her hand is held highest) is really beautiful with a lovely pose from the model. She almost looks as though she was not posing which for me always makes the best "pose". The lighting looks excellent to me on this shot too although I know nothing about such areas of photography.
The colourings between hair face and shawl are so compatible.
It seems to have escaped most if not all the halo thingy that is present around the other picture of this model.
I am wondering now if a little (very little) more light on the raised hand is needed here but that is only a nit-pic.

The static, pose of the other model does not work for me. I feel she is trying too hard with the result that the face, especially the area around the mouth, seems to freeze.

Yes I wondered about the hand myself, it had been darkened along with the background, I lightened it slightly perhaps a little more would be worthwhile.

            Hi Patrick -

            A great series of shots.

I think #1 is almost perfect.

            Regards. Barr1e

Beautiful models, really lovely shots. Can't pick a favourite out of the first two..

My daughter has strawberry blonde hair like that - will have to see if I can give her the pre-raphaelite treatment next time she's home ;-)

I like the first the best, the second looks as though its had some heavy pp, and third looks like she has sat on a drawing pin or something

                  Hi Ash

Both of the shots of the red headed girl have received much the same post processing, mainly darkening the background it was a light coloured one, hence the moire lines Stephen pointed out.
The surprised look of the other girl is what appealed to me.

                    Hi

never done any studio work but would love to someday so my "critique" is based purely on opinion rather than experience. I love the first picture, composition and softness of the colour tones. The third does not work for me. I can see it has been well composed and processed but the expression is a real killer, I don't find it engaging probably because I am confused about what the model is trying to show.

Do you have any more of this model?

                    best regards
